GRANNY SQUARES

From the Crochet Study

A classic of the crochet world, the granny square has traveled remarkably far from its humble handmade beginnings.

Built one small square at a time, these colorful crocheted motifs became an unmistakable part of fashion in the 1960s and ’70s—pieced together into vests, camisoles, long duster cardigans, skirts, pants and other wonderfully free-spirited pieces that came to define the era.

Granny Squares began as a study of that familiar handwork. The dimensional stitches and repeating floral geometry of crochet are reinterpreted as original artwork, then translated onto fabric—turning something traditionally constructed from yarn into a completely different kind of textile.

The repetition is part of its charm. Individual squares sit side by side like tiny pieces of handwork, creating a larger pattern with all the rhythm, color and slightly homespun character of the original inspiration. Draped as a scarf, the orderly grid disappears into folds, allowing flashes of the individual “crocheted” flowers to emerge.

Nostalgic without feeling costume-like, Granny Squares celebrates an enduring craft and the wonderfully inventive moment when traditional handwork found its way into fashion.

Part of the Crochet Study — a collection exploring familiar crochet stitches and techniques, reimagined through print and wearable textile design.
